Yes, this exists — but the best India opportunity is not “another ORS” or “energy drink”. It is a premium, low-sugar, athlete-specific electrolyte tablet with a clear performance use case.

Executive take

Build it as a “sports hydration tablet”, not a sugary sports drink. The Minavolis-like magic — drop, fizz, taste, ritual — maps almost perfectly to electrolyte tablets. The category already exists globally through Nuun, GU, SiS, High5 and in India through Fast&Up Reload. The gap is a trustable Indian athlete product that is more precise than generic ORS, less sugary than Gatorade-style RTD, more premium than sachets, and easier to carry than bottles.

What to sell

A tube of 10–20 effervescent tablets. One tablet in 250–500 ml water. Fizzy, cold, refreshing; 5 electrolytes; low sugar; optional caffeine/B-vitamin variant.

What not to promise

Hard truth

A single 4–6 g effervescent tablet cannot deliver serious endurance carbs. If “energy” means calories for 90+ minute sport, launch a powder/sachet or 2-tablet endurance format.

The ingredient architecture is surprisingly consistent across brands. The tablet is not just “vitamins”; it is a compressed acid-base reaction system that carries salts, flavour and sweetener.

Why this matters: recent hydration science distinguishes rapid hydration from carbohydrate fueling. Hypotonic, sodium-led, low-carb drinks can hydrate well; high-carb drinks fuel longer sessions but can slow fluid delivery if too concentrated.

Regulatory and claim strategy for India

Category

Work with an FSSAI consultant/manufacturer to classify as a food supplement / proprietary food / beverage mix as appropriate. Avoid casually calling it “Health Drink”. FSSAI has clarified that “Health Drink” is not defined or standardized under the FSS Act.

Energy drink wording

Do not use “energy drink” unless it falls within the permitted FSSAI caffeinated beverage category. FSSAI/PIB says “Energy Drink” is tied to specific water-based flavoured drink categories under the caffeinated beverage standard.

Caffeine

If using caffeine, label it as a caffeinated product and check the mg/L rule for the prepared beverage. Keep caffeine out of the first mass SKU to reduce regulatory and family-use friction.

ORS trap

Do not imply it treats diarrhoea, dehydration illness, hangovers, heatstroke, cramps, or medical electrolyte imbalance. “ORS” is a medicalized term with its own consumer expectations and regulatory sensitivity.

Claims you can likely build around

“Electrolytes lost in sweat”, “supports hydration during exercise”, “low sugar”, “portable”, “fizzes in water”, “sodium-led formula for sweaty workouts” — final wording needs label/legal review.

Testing trust

For athlete credibility, pursue batch testing / banned-substance assurance later. Fast&Up already uses Informed Choice as a trust badge, so serious athletes may expect it.

Pick a sharp beachhead: hot-weather athletes.

Risks and mitigations

Humidity destroys tablets

Effervescent tabs are moisture-sensitive. Use proper tube/desiccant/foil, accelerated stability testing, and humidity-proof manufacturing.

Too salty tastes bad

Sodium is useful but can hurt taste. Use citrate blends, flavour masking, and separate “heat/salty sweater” SKU.

Energy claim confusion

B-vitamins do not provide calories. Be clear: “hydration energy” is not the same as endurance fuel.

Regulatory language
